But while Matty is thought to be the song’s muse, the second verse name-drops another artist entirely, with Taylor singing: “You smoked, then ate seven bars of chocolate / We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.”
Charlie did not immediately respond to Taylor’s shoutout, but on May 3, he alluded to the fanfare he’d received as a result of it while sharing a new song with his TikTok followers.
And during a recent appearance on Today, Charlie discussed The Tortured Poets Department more directly, with the star admitting that he thought he already was a pretty successful artist before Taylor said that he should be "bigger."
Charlie also said that Taylor’s lyrical style in the song had inspired him, explaining: “It’s inspiring, that’s for sure; it made me think about different ways to write songs, and her way of writing almost being overly detailed in the music.”

“I’m like: ‘I wonder if I can do a little bit of that, too?’” he said, before concluding: “I’m working on it!”
Earlier this year, Charlie recalled the “surreal” experience of hearing about the name-drop for the first time during an interview with Rolling Stone, confirming that he wasn’t given a heads-up beforehand.
